RYAN TORREY
Varsity Head Coach
Ryan Torrey enters his first season as Head Coach of University High School Baseball, bringing nearly 20 years of coaching experience and a lifelong passion for helping young athletes become the best versions of themselves.
Throughout his career, Ryan has been involved in nearly every aspect of player development, including strength and conditioning, nutrition, recruiting, sports psychology, and the development of training systems designed to help athletes improve their physical skills more efficiently.
Ryan graduated from Newport Harbor High School before beginning his collegiate baseball career at Azusa Pacific University. After one year, he transferred to Concordia University Irvine, where he continued his playing career and earned a degree in Pre-Physical Therapy. Following college, Ryan played independent professional baseball before taking his career overseas, spending three seasons playing professionally in Australia and one season in Germany.
Ryan began his coaching career at Santa Margarita Catholic High School while simultaneously coaching with the Baltimore Orioles Scout Team, which later became the San Diego Padres Scout Team. He also spent more than a decade with Quakes Baseball Academy before founding Whitecaps Baseball Academy in 2020. As the owner and director of Whitecaps, Ryan managed teams from 12U through 18U, competing at both the local and national levels while building a player development system centered on long-term growth.
Over the years, Ryan has had the opportunity to coach players at virtually every stage of the game, from five-year-olds picking up a baseball for the first time to Major League players preparing for their next season. He has coached athletes from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, including players who spoke little or no English. Those experiences helped shape one of the core principles of his coaching philosophy: every player is different, but growth, accountability, and hard work are universal.
One of Ryan's greatest passions as a coach is continuing to learn and evolve. He remains a student of strength and conditioning, sports performance, nutrition, leadership, player development, and the mental side of the game while continually learning from coaches at every level.
His motivation is simple: become a better coach every day so he can better serve the players who trust him with their development. As he begins his first season leading University High School Baseball, Ryan's goal is to build a program and culture focused not only on developing better baseball players, but also on challenging young men to grow, hold themselves accountable, compete, and become better versions of themselves both on and off the field.
BRIAN CASTELLI
Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach Brian “Cas” Castelli brings a lifetime of coaching experience and a deep love for the game to University High School. With sixteen years of high school baseball coaching across all three levels and more than forty years of total high school coaching experience, Cas is stepping into this new chapter with genuine excitement. He’s eager to invest in a new group of student-athletes and help them grow as players and young men.
Cas has spent three decades teaching in the Anaheim Union High School District, and along the way he has coached cross country, track, and even had brief stints with football, basketball, and soccer. Baseball has always been his true passion, and his dedication to the sport shows in everything he does. He also devoted years to coaching all four of his sons through their youth baseball journeys. One went on to play at MSU Billings, and another is currently competing at Cal Baptist. Cas and his wife of more than thirty years also have two daughters who round out their busy, sports-loving family.
One of the things that sets Cas apart is his appreciation for the mental side of baseball. He is already working with our players on strategies to handle both the highs and lows that come with competing. His goal is to help athletes build integrity, pride, and a genuine commitment to the game, knowing that the lessons learned on the field carry over into everyday life.
Cas considers it an honor and a privilege to coach your sons, and the Trojan community is fortunate to have him guiding the next generation of ballplayers.
